Privacy Policy
Last updated: January 2026
TL;DR: Cepub does not collect personal data. We use anonymous analytics (PostHog) to improve the extension. Article conversion happens locally in your browser.
Overview
Cepub ("the Extension") is a browser extension that converts web articles to EPUB format. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we access and how we handle it.
Data Collection
We do not collect personal data. Specifically:
- No personal information is collected
- No browsing history is tracked or stored
- No cookies are used for tracking purposes
Analytics
We use PostHog to collect anonymous usage analytics to help us improve the Extension. This includes:
- Feature usage (e.g., which buttons are clicked)
- Error reports to help us fix bugs
- General usage patterns (e.g., number of articles converted)
What we do NOT collect:
- Article content or URLs you visit
- Personal information or identifiers
- Browsing history
All analytics data is anonymized and cannot be used to identify you personally.
Data Processing
The Extension processes the following data locally in your browser:
- Article content: When you use the Extension, it reads the content of web pages you choose to convert. This content is processed entirely within your browser and is never transmitted elsewhere.
- Generated EPUB files: The ebook files are created locally and saved directly to your device. We have no access to these files.
- Extension settings: Your preferences are stored locally using Chrome's storage API and are not synced or transmitted.
Permissions
The Extension requests the following permissions:
- activeTab: To read the content of the current page when you activate the Extension
- tabs: To get the URL and title of the current tab for article metadata
- storage: To save your preferences locally
- unlimitedStorage: To store article content including images when collecting multiple articles
- sidePanel: To display the Extension interface
- scripting: To extract article content from web pages
- alarms: To manage background tasks during auto-discovery
- webNavigation: To detect page navigation and update the side panel
- host permissions: To extract article content from any website you choose to convert
These permissions are used solely for the Extension's core functionality and not for data collection.
Third-Party Services
The Extension uses PostHog for anonymous analytics. PostHog's privacy policy can be found at posthog.com/privacy. We do not use any advertising networks.
Data Retention
Since we don't collect data, there is no data retention. Any temporary data used during article conversion is discarded immediately after the EPUB is generated.
Children's Privacy
The Extension does not knowingly collect any information from children under 13 years of age.
Changes to This Policy
If we make changes to this privacy policy, we will update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
